Chinese Jade Statue of a Confucian Sage

Height: 31,5 cm Width: 20 cm Depth: 5,5 cm
Statue made of jade in the typically Chinese 19th century.
The statue is very beautiful and rests on an oval base made of very fine dark wood. The lower part of the statue is dark, in a colour tending towards grey-black (this could be reminiscent of the sea and its waves), on top of which the two main characters of the sculpture rest.
They represent a Confucian sage with a woman, smaller than him. The figures are adorned with white waves, which seem to symbolise water. In addition, different animals are depicted: a crocodile, a peacock and a monkey.
